First-gen Cardinals - Biology
|
North Central is made-up 40% first generation college students, or students that are the first in their family to go to college. Cardinal First is an award-winning program that embraces students first-gen experiences. With the support of an Arthur Vining Davis foundation grant and Cardinal First, I started and currently lead the First gen Cardinals-Biology group. Two to three times a semester, we host workshops for students to get to know one-another, the professors in the department, and former alumni. Our workshops also cover topics such as meta-cognition of studying, careers in biology, resume/CV building, and learning about campus. I also meet one-on-one with each of the 40 students every semester and provide mentorship for any of their current and pressing needs, such as how to approach professors about office hours, selecting courses, and fulfilling the biology major.

TEDx 2021
In Spring 2021, I had the pleasure of collaborating with North Center's Center for Social Impact in hosting an annual TedX event about climate change. CountDown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. The goal is to advocate cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 in the race to a zero-carbon world. I served as a panelist contributing my knowledge about how plants, agriculture, and ecosystems may have to adapt to changes in climate.
ENACTUS- Guatemala
|
I had the pleasure of joining NC's ENACTUS team on their trip to Guatemala to learn about sustainable business models that benefit merchants in Guatemala. With professors from NC's Department of Anthropology and Business school, we learned about coffee agriculture and processing. In the future, I hope to do research that benefits the coffee farmers with NC students.

Science Camp
Pre-COVID, NC offered camps for incoming first-year students to get to know one another, the campus, and their professors in a fun way. As both a camp leader and co-leader, I met students from different STEM disciplines while taking them on local science experiences like the Morton Arboretum and sport fishing in Lake Michigan.
Tree Committee
North Central is a level 2 accredited Tree Campus USA arboretum. On the tree committee, we maintain the tree species diversity on campus and create tree care plans to keep our accreditation.
